The Carolina Chickadee use a cavity to rear its young. It can make a nest hole in very soft wood but prefers to use a natural cavity, old woodpecker hole, or a man made nest box.

Note that a Chickadee's nest base is made of moss with a cup on top made of fine roots and other fine material.
